Bard Out Loud is a new program for teens who wish to engage with classical texts with an eye towards progressive reads of Shakespeare’s plays. Students will embark on a two month journey to create a theater piece based on Shakespeare’s words, personal experience, and found poetry. Through the process of theater creation, students will explore issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class and consider what Shakespeare and others have to say about the views that shape our world and society. The program will explore the ways that theater arts can help us express ourselves, our experience and our needs, and empower students to use art to communicate with their peers. All levels of Shakespearean experience are welcome, but bravery and creativity are essential! Come be part of this epic new adventure and help us stretch the limits of what it means to engage old text with young minds.

Bard Out Loud will be directed by Molly Conway, a recent graduate of Bard College, who has directed several Shakespeare plays and assistant directed last year’s Teen Touring Company "Romeo and Juliet". At Bard, Molly led the Hudson Valley Gay Straight Discussion Group, high school students who taught about health, safety and sexuality and facilitated open discussions on student chosen topics. Molly believes strongly in the power of theater to empower us to discover ourselves and impact the world around us. She would be more than happy to answer your questions about Bard Out Loud and can be reached at HarlequinValentine@mac.com.
