HENRY IV, Part 1
But what’s the point of doing Henry IV, Part 1 without the completion of the story, Henry IV, Part 2? And if we didn’t do Part 2 with Part 1, when would we ever do it? The fact that we present plays in repertory made it seem inconceivable to try to tackle one without the other. We didn’t want to lose the plays’ richness by conflating them, as has been done often. Yet Part 2 is not considered a popular play, and Marin Shakespeare had never tried to present two history plays in one season before.
Still… we were up for the challenge! All the more so when we achieved a long-held dream of luring Rob Clare from Oxford to direct a full production in San Rafael. Rob has been a visiting guest artist here for a decade -- teaching workshops, helping to cut scripts, and sitting in on rehearsals. He and Artistic Director Robert Currier had developed a fast friendship and deep trust. The Henry IV plays were a perfect use of Rob’s massive Shakespearean knowledge.
